Transcription from Greek to English language
of the Popi Tsapanidou interview to Nickos A. Poulianos, regarding the “Y chromosome in Tsapanidou microscope” -
broadcasted during the January 18th 2010 for about 3,5 minutes (cf. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiicGQB53g4), in the NET state TV sited at
Athens. The above broadcast bears the following subtitles:
0:00 - 0:14 / Tsapanidou
- We welcome today Dr of anthropology and paleontology Nickos Poulianos to
examine whether it is truth that males are gradually going to disappear.
Poulianos -
Such a danger for our society does not exist.
Tsapanidou -
Meaning the gradual decrease of the Y chromosome, ok?
0:14 - 0:39 / Nickos Poulianos - Initially I would like to
thank you for the chance you often give, also to other scientists, to report to
the society concerning our work. Society (in any case) is our principal
employer.
Tsapanidou -
The pleasure is all ours.
0:40 - 2:27 / Poulianos - According to a recent study
published on Nature Y chromosome is supposed to evolve faster compared to the
other chromosomes. To me seems a little premature (rushing) getting to such a
conclusion. First because they (the Nature authors) consider the chronological
distance (of the common ancestor) between humans and chimps to be only 5-6
million years, while here in the Anthropological Association of Greece
(www.aee.gr) we are closer to the opinion that this separation took place (at
least) 10-13 million years ago (as for example Bounak, Debetz, Simpson, Kretzoi & others).
Therefore the change that occurred to the Y chromosome only seems to be fast.
Any genetic change practically affects all chromosomes, which are constantly
interacting during the course of evolution (probably by mechanisms not yet
fully discovered - not yet clearly understood). On the other hand in the
2:27 - 2:31
/ Tsapanidou - What so ever,
men appear to be the weakest gender.
2:32 - 3:17 / Poulianos
– Since we come to examine the co-respective roles, females to an extent are
more conservative, in the notion of preserving our society posses (and not in
the meaning of stuck-in-the-mud). On the other hand it seems, from the brain
structure too (hormones etc), that men are more inclined to explorations and
experiments, which however in most of the cases end to a fiasco. Therefore we
are obliged and needing the female way of thinking in order to preserve what we
already posses, improving it little by little, as mush as possible.
Tsapanidou -
Thank you.
Poulianos -
Kali mera (good day).
3:17 - 3:37 / The same interview is followed at the end by
the salute of the sweet voices of school pupils.
